Virgin Media O2 has delivered mobile coverage to Craster in Northumberland for the first time, following the installation of a new mobile site in an area that previously had no coverage from any operator.
The new mast will provide a mobile signal to the whole of Craster, which is an important tourist destination attracting more than 250,000 visitors every single year.
Virgin Media is using a Starlink mobile backhaul solution to deliver 4G coverage to the area, as the remote area does not currently have access to the fibre networks typically used to carry mobile traffic to and from the mast.
Once new fibre lines are installed to connect the area later this year, the site will also be upgraded, bringing 5G connectivity to Craster and the surrounding areas.
Virgin Media O2 worked with Atlas Tower Group to deliver the new site.
Steven Verigotta, Director of Mobile Delivery at Virgin Media O2, (pictured) said: “As part of our commitment to improving rural connectivity, we’re using satellite connectivity to bring mobile coverage to Craster for the first time.
"Our investment to deliver reliable connectivity in this area will transform visitors' experience and improve opportunities for local businesses and residents.”
